This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada (non-spoiler review) // this many plot twists are probably not the best for my health

Book: This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada

Rating: 3.5 stars

Synopsis:

When a lone soldier, Cole, arrives with news of Lachlan Agatta’s death, all hope seems lost for Catarina. Her father was the world’s leading geneticist, and humanity’s best hope of beating a devastating virus. Then, hidden beneath Cole’s genehacked enhancements she finds a message of hope: Lachlan created a vaccine.

Only she can find and decrypt it, if she can unravel the clues he left for her. The closer she gets, the more she finds herself at risk from Cartaxus, a shadowy organization with a stranglehold on the world’s genetic tech. But it’s too late to turn back.

There are three billion lives at stake, two people who can save them, and one final secret that Cat must unlock. A secret that will change everything.

INITIAL THOUGHTS

This was totallyy a cover buy oops? I have now read the book and I know what the cover means and it’s kinda gross but still looks so cool + on the edges of the book it creates a DNA strand thing? It’s so cool

PLOT

I loved the plot. The dystopian/sci-fi feel of it made it reminiscent of most other YA books out there, but the idea of the virus was so original and the plot twists and tech made it feel completely different.

EXECUTION

Okay and there were so many small twists and turns in this book that kept me on edge and wanting to read more. That and the fact that I take technology as a subject and I love it and it was so cool actually understanding all the technological terms? So those two points definitely brought up the rating a lot.

ROMANCE

Was weird? There was a weird love triangle/square, but there wasn’t actually? Which sounds so confusing I know, but I can’t say much else. There honestly was no chemistry between them as well.

As to if I’d recommend it? I don’t think I would. There were a lot of cliches and tropes in this book and while I could overlook most of that because I loved the plot twists/tech aspects, I don’t think it’s for everyone.

  1. I read this book a few months ago and had very similar thoughts!! I loved all the technology (I study engineering so similar to you!!) and loved the fact that they used all the technical terms and didnt tone it down and it all actually made sense! But yes the romance was so so clichéd I ended up laughing at it far too much!! Overall I enjoyed it and think I’ll read the sequel but there are definite issues!! Are you going to read the sequel?
