Illuminae by Amie Kaufman + Jay Kristoff (non-spoiler review)

Book: Illuminae by Amie Kaufman + Jay Kristoff

Rating: 4 stars

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

I’ve heard so much about this series! However sci-fi isn’t really my thing and the formatting (which I thought was awesome) did scare me a bit.

I loved the plot so much! So much action and drama and IT WAS AWESOME. The start was a bit smack bang in your face because, one the formatting, and two it was just sudden? After a while though, things were developed well and flowed well. Plus! There a lot of small twists and turns that I enjoyed.

Also I’ve heard the audio book is amazing as well? So if the formatting isn’t for you, you could consider that 🙂

It was definitely a bit harder for me to gain a connection to the main characters, but I loved it so much! The format was really nice too! It felt really immersive and was a nice break from the usual pages and pages of text.

Kady: Kady was strong and awesome and just hella cool okay? She has so much love for her mother and Ezra and fonriefojddfsd

Ezra: Ezra is just a bean and I love him?

Aiden: I adored Aiden so much. I really love the whole concept of AI/tech trying to comprehend emotions (as they’re often unsuccessful and it makes for some hilarious moments)

Also I did get confused with the ships (like actual spaceships not pairings bahaha) and all the characters at time as well so that’s that. It definitely was only with the more minor characters but that did make it a bit more confusing.
