Book: Unearthed by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
Rating: 3.5 stars
When Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race, it seems like the solution the planet has been waiting for. The Undying’s advanced technology has the potential to undo environmental damage and turn lives around, and Gaia, their former home planet, is a treasure trove waiting to be uncovered.
For Jules Addison and his fellow scholars, the discovery of an alien culture offers unprecedented opportunity for study… as long as scavengers like Amelia Radcliffe don’t loot everything first. Mia and Jules’ different reasons for smuggling themselves onto Gaia put them immediately at odds, but after escaping a dangerous confrontation with other scavvers, they form a fragile alliance.
In order to penetrate the Undying temple and reach the tech and information hidden within, the two must decode the ancient race’s secrets and survive their traps. But the more they learn about the Undying, the more their presence in the temple seems to be part of a grand design that could spell the end of the human race…
I don’t normally read sci-fi, but this sounded so cool + I enjoy both Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner’s writing so yeah
The start wasn’t as faced paced as the rest of the book and towards the end it felt almost rushed, and for me things got a bit muddled. I enjoyed the twists and turns but some ̣(especially nearer to the end) seemed so random because I never picked up on any previous clues or foreshadowing.
I wasn’t on board with the romance either. Like could they have just been good friends? Yeah I mean they barely really knew each other. I didn’t hate it, it wasn’t instalove but I’m not the biggest fan of it.
This whole book was such a whirlwind. I loved seeing them solve the puzzles + the dialogue between the two was awesome. A downfall was the time used to describe the puzzles and their workings weren’t at all action packed and fast paced like the rest of the book. The ending of the book was this whole big reveal thing and while I didn’t expect it, I wasn’t amazed by it either. I do want to find out what happens, but I have no idea if I’ll pick up the second book.
Jules: He’s smart. Like no he isn’t the fastest or the strongest. He is SMART + I loved that.
Amelia: Amelia was such a fun kick ass character. Her banter was amusing to read and beyond that she’s a strong and really caring character.
